Charlie Smith, “Call Girls”

August 19, 2007

My rage, you bet
and its spectacular aftermath, the visits from the cops,
the cut-rate pharmacies where
I bought medicine,
the all-night theaters
I retired to,
let me justify this,
the downtowns deserted by all but their most
persistent citizens,
the cries from two streets
over
as the pack began to circle back,
all this, I promise you,
explicable,
the covenants unalluded to,
the supermarkets I got stranded in,
the old girlfriends I called and out of consideration
for their new circumstances
never identified myself to,
all these,
a matter of reason, of consquence -
the particular block on Sunset
near some palm trees
where I faltered,
unable to go on,
the Mexican couple I mistook for informers,
the spectacular sunsets in that
part of the world,
the slow aging of affection,
the disputes, the roaring in traffic,
the conversion I reneged on,
something - maybe
you remember - to do with pride
and a diffident manner, some idea -
as I said - I was once
devoted to.

David Milch paraphrases Henry James

August 17, 2007
“I’m going to make a world not certain to be saved, a world the perfection of which shall be conditional merely, the condition that each several agent does its own ‘level best.’ I offer you the chance of taking part in such a world….Will you join the procession? Will you trust yourself and trust the other agents enough to face the risk?”
